Saia Dugan is a sound artist who focuses on electronic music, sound installation, and sculpture. His key areas of interest are sonification–taking things that you can’t hear and giving them a sound–and kinetic sculpture, with particular emphasis on the sound of movement. Working between FL studio, open-source electronics, and Perspex, he is very inclined towards interactivity and objects that bring meaning and ideas through physical or perceptual engagement. Saia’s interest in these areas comes from a deep nature of enquiry that is practiced in all aspects of his life, interrogating how things work on a very practical level, while being mystified and inspired by the things which he cannot understand. His goal is to find a balance between the two and allow others to experience similar feelings with his work. Much of Saia’s practice holds a strong sense of repetitive rhythm whether it’s musical or structural. Dance, in its vibrational form, is the foundation. Musical creations and structural ones are inherently woven together in form and mutual reinforcement. Alongside these practices he also composes original scores for film and produces and performs various forms of music.
